2021 Granjoux Shiraz

A$125.00

The shiraz fruit was handpicked on Saturday 20th March 2021. 3.64t was picked, with 2% of this co-planted with viognier. The fruit was then chilled down and stored overnight. 2.84t was then crushed and destemmed to then ferment in stainless. This fruit was then pressed on April 5th, and racked in Gamba (Allier, Tronçais Forrest) oak puncheons on April 14th. The remaining 0.8t of fruit, as whole bunches, was placed into Terracotta Amphora, and pigéaged by foot as it was added to the vessel. This was left with wild yeast to ferment for just over a month. Later basket-pressed into stainless steel and barrel-aged in French barrique, 40% of which was new oak. Both parcels were then matured for just over 17 months, when they were then blended and bottled on the 20th September 2022.

The 2021 Beechworth Shiraz is an exceptional example of the variety grown on our Devonian granite soils. A rich and intense deep crimson in colour, the wine is elegant and instantly entices you with it’s initial aromas. Rich dark cherry followed by perfumed rose, vanilla, buttery cocoa and rich-roasted coffee bean. Elegant and ripe black and blue fruit aromas continue to dance on the palate. Beautifully woven silky tannins, the influence of the amphora component of the wine works to deliver blackberry, macerated strawberry, clove, nutmeg, and gentle savouriness of mace on the palate. The spices and richness of the ripe fruit characters provides the wine with great structure and complexity – the 2021 Shiraz is an exceptional example of a cool-climate shiraz.

2021 Wine Reviews

“…Succulent fruit-sweetness in the core is countered by firming tannins that give it backbone and lengthen the aftertaste. A lovely wine and a very promising first release from this close-planted vineyard of individually staked vines.” - 96 points from Huon Hooke, The Real Review.

“Fine-tuned, precise and yet plush and devilishly elegant…Beautifully composed with a deep heart of spice-laden fruit, drawn together firmly with a dry, astringent flourish to close.” - 96 points from Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion.
