2022 Granjoux Chardonnay Reviews

DECEMBER 2024 | BY CAMPBELL MATTINSON, THE WINEFRONT

“What this wine does is deliver the essential deliciousness of chardonnay. You could build a business around this wine called Sip and Swoon. It’s awash with pear and peach flavours, and wonderful versions thereof, but the way almond paste, peanut brittle, elderberry and cedar characters circle the fruit is really something special. Joy lives in the heart of this wine, and the wine is happy to share. This wine is fine, complex and long-flavoured but fundamentally it’s just a gorgeous wine to drink. Drink: 2024 – 2034.”

DECEMBER 2024 | BY JENI PORT, HALLIDAY WINE COMPANION

“Pressed whole bunch to stainless steel tank, racked off heavy solids into a two-year-old French puncheon and aged 16 months on lees. An historic, walled, former vineyard site brought back to life...and what life, vitality and beauty it brings with it. Bright green gold. Delicate and lifted aromas in citrus blossom, white peach, Meyer lemon, melon, lime zest and grilled hazelnuts. There's depth, there's concentration, but there's also an understated elegance that is hugely appealing. Creamily textured with great drive and acidity; it's a keeper. Drink to 2032.”

NOVEMBER 2024 | BY ERIN LARKIN, ROBERT PARKER WINE ADVOCATE

“After the impactful 2021 release, the 2022 Chardonnay has some big boots to fill. Aromatically, the wine is not as reductive as last year and leads with lilac, white florals, tarragon, lavender, mint and white peach. There's a register of salted nuts (pistachio, cashew, etc.) and flinty, slate-inflected character in the backdrop. In the mouth, the wine is focused and citrusy, with scratched lemon peel, beeswax, hawthorn flowers, pineapple husk, nettles and green apples. It is so different from the last vintage, but to me, this is potentially even more eloquent of the place, given the backseat driving of the winemaking. This is a quieter, more precise rendition of this vineyard and a welcome one at that. The acidity through the finish might clip the fruit flavours a little, but I would suggest this will quiet down over the next few years as the fruit blossoms around it. Great. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink: 2024 – 2027.”

Awarded 95 points.
